Cliffs of Moher by boat

The Cliffs of Moher are the main attraction in Ireland. Over a million tourists come here every year to visit this magnificent place. I’ve been there a lot of times, and I don’t think I will ever get tired of the breathtaking views. I’ve seen the cliffs by hiking, going through the main entrance, stopping by to catch the sunset and bringing friends over. But, one of the most memorable ways I have seen it was definitely by boat!

It was a last minute arrangement, a friend of mine who was moving from Ireland to Portugal got a free trip to the Cliffs, including a boat ride. Luckily knowing the right people, I could join her to do this tour going on the same boat. And, it was the perfect moment to spend our last moments here together. I hate farewells (who doesn’t?), but a farewell at the Cliffs of Moher is surely a special way to say bye to a friend.

The boats departs from Doolin Pier and the tour takes approximately 1 hour. Prices can vary between 15-20 euros. As knowing the locals who run the business there, I didn’t pay to join the tour.

We also got so lucky with the weather and the sun was shining! This tour only operates if the weather conditions are good, it can get very wild in this part of Ireland. They don’t call it the Wild Atlantic Way for nothing! Despite the good conditions, it’s always a bit windy when you are at sea, so it is recommended to bring a windproof jacket for this tour.

If you want your journey to be more exhilarating, just go to the front of the boat, you will be jumping around each time a wave breaks. It is fun (just have to mind your camera so it doesn’t get wet), but you also can feel a bit dizzy with all this rocking.

These white dots you can spot in the pictures, that look like snow, but they are actually birds! From the pictures you can’t see it clearly, but there is a crazy amount of birds around there. Our guide said that the biggest bird colony in Ireland is found at the Cliffs of Moher, and I completely believe him. I’ve never seen so many birds together at the same place, it is beautiful!

I was very excited to see some Puffins, I love these birds, however, I have never seen them in real life. I am not sure if I saw one there that day, I couldn’t distinguish if some of the birds there were Puffins (perhaps I have to change my glasses!). Probably they were there, I just couldn’t spot them. Next time I will make sure to bring a binocular with me, and get to see all the Puffins!

IMG_7290IMG_7293 IMG_7296 IMG_7294IMG_7313The Cliffs are massive, and seeing them from this perspective gives you an idea on how big they really are. You can see people walking on the top of it, and from the sea they look like tiny ants. It’s unreal the size of the Cliffs!

The boat doesn’t get really close for safety reasons, as some rocks can fall from the cliffs. They get close enough so you can get an unforgettable view from this special place. It is definitely worth going on a boat tour.

IMG_7319 IMG_7333 IMG_7323 Is the Cliffs of Moher by boat tour worth it? Despite getting a bit nauseous after the tour, I really loved every part of it and highly recommend this alternative tour to see the Cliffs of Moher. The perfect combo would be to walk around the top and then go to see it from the sea. I`m sure you will have a memorable day afterwards and get lots of beautiful picture of this natural wonder. ♥

  1. I lived in Ireland and have been back multiple times and only was able to see the cliffs once! All because of fog haha. You got a beautiful day and going to see them by boat looks amazing- I’ll have to try that next time. Maybe not as foggy down there either haha.

  2. I haven’t been to Ireland yet, but it is on my bucket list and I will definitely see the Cliffs of Moher when I do. You got a beautiful day and going to see them by boat looks amazing… Beautiful pictures, thanks for sharing.

  3. The idea that the rocks can fall sent shivers up my spine! I don’t know why I’ve never realized that. It’s good that the tours are safety conscious.

  4. I never knew you could take a boat around the cliffs! I’m definitely putting this on my bucket list. I’d also really love to see some puffins
